You’ve done it! You’ve graduated with your Fine Arts degree and are headed for the real world! However, you are also figuring out how to pursue your art AND pay your bills right out of school (not to mention those Student Loans)! Here is a list of potential day jobs that could help you pay your rent, fuel your artistic side, and have flexibility with your theatre schedule.

1. Nanny/Babysitter

If you enjoy being with children, being a nanny or consistent babysitting is a wonderful option. It can be incredibly rewarding to spend your day with kids, and if you find a family that you really connect with and care for, they are more than likely to work around your theatre schedule because they trust you and want you around their kids.

2. Teaching Theatre to Kids/Young Adults

Many children’s theatre companies and after school programs employ artists, so they understand how hectic your schedule can be, and there are usually available and willing teachers to sub for you if you have a last minute change for an audition or whatnot. Just make sure to return the favor and sub in when you are able!

3. Working at a Gym

Working as a front desk receptionist, personal trainer, or exercise instructor at a gym is a great way to spend your day. You can keep those endorphins up and work with the gym in figuring out the best work hours for your schedule.

4. Temp Agency

Classic, but it works! Connecting with a Temp Agency can give you many options for work and finds the best fit for your skills and availability.

5. Restaurant Job

When it clicks, it clicks! If you are excited by the hustle and bustle of the food industry, give being a host/hostess or waiter/waitress a go. You will usually be among many artists, and hopefully a compassionate and encouraging employer. You have the opportunity to bond with restaurant goers, as well as the occasional free or reduced-price meal, and tips to add to your paycheck.

6. Dog Walking/Pet Care

Need some pups or kitties in your life? Check out online sites and apps to find animals in your area that need care. Most pet owners are flexible in when they need you to come by.

7. SAT/ACT Tutor

If you are a strong test taker and have fun working through test prep, helping young adults prepare through after school programs or private tutoring could be for you.

8. Personal Assistant

Love organization, filing, computer work, and running errands? Find a person who needs an assistant and find the best schedule for you both.

9. Office Reception

If you are comfortable with speaking on the phone, have computer skills, and don’t mind sitting for long periods of time, look into office reception!
